This is the second of a two-part story using several pulp heroes in the pulp domain. The main storyline is about a group of German's called "The Sons of Thor", who have been plotting to take over the world, and are now allied with the Nazis in the years before the US entered the War.
This volume concludes the storyline.
The main character is the Phantom Detective, a long-running pulp hero.
In this volume, he is joined by several other characters (or they are mentioned). This include Jim Anthony, Super Detective; Tiger Standish (tho the author appears to have written him as a little less jingoistic as his creator did); King of the Royal Mounted (met by another character, but not part of the main storyline); the Black Bat; Rex Parker (who would later become the Masked Detective).
Am not sure if I missed any other real or literary characters.
Overall, a good story (tho there are a few issues. Reference is made to Control/Central, but this was not mentioned in the previous volume. I also caught a few minor typos).
I am unclear why the use of the PD pulp heroes wasn't played up more.
This story does allow for future appearances together by these characters, with them being placed 'in the same universe'. We'll see if this is used again.

Pro Se Presents Erwin K Roberts 9781475250671 Books Reviews
The first part of Book Two features Jim Anthony in “Home On The Pandemic Range”, where the Sons of Thor are working on a virus to release around the world. As best I can figure the story takes place in the late 1930s. Felix Thomas, the Railway Post Office car employee, is reading Doc Savage Magazine, “The Munitions Master” from 1938. Tiger Standish, Howard Hughes, Wrong-Way Corrigan, and The Phantom Detective are in the story.
The second half of the book brings in The Black Bat, Carol, Butch, and Silk, In “The LaGuardia Action”. Frank Havens, acting as CONTROL, brings in other pulp heroes of the time to battle The Sons of Thor. Rex Parker is called, but he has not as yet become The Masked Detective. Mike Axford makes an appearance, as does Jim Anthony and Hooks McGuire. The Celluloid Burglar & the Green Ghost (Johnston McCulley, maybe) are mentioned, Bob Clarke (The Crimson Mask), Dr. Skull’s free clinic is mentioned. Some of these characters were not around in 1938, so I’m not positive about the timeline, but WWII is not mentioned, although Nazis and Hitler are. Also showing up towards the end is Sergeant Harrison “Pretty Damn” Hasty. The Sons of Thor appear to be planning on replacing important people with look-alikes.
Although each book can be read separately, The Sons of Thor is the theme of both books, and highly recommended to be read together. The novel is well written, and entertaining from beginning to end. Pulp fans will enjoy all the cameos of their favorite pulp characters, and the action is fast paced. A good read!
This is the first of a two-part story using several pulp heroes in the pulp domain.
The main storyline is about a group of German's called "The Sons of Thor", who have been plotting to take over the world, and are now allied with the Nazis in the years before the US entered the War.
This volume sets the stage, with a long flashback with Lt. Richard Van Loan in WWI dealing with the Sons of Thor. He has a brief meeting with Captain Midnight.
For those not aware, Richard Van Loan would later become the Phantom Detective, a long-running pulp hero.
Secret Agent X is mentioned, but does not appear, tho his government boss, K-9 is loosely involved. Dr. Skull is mentioned. He is an identity for The Skull-Killer, the pulp hero who appeared in The Octopus and The Scorpion.
The Crimson Mask does appear briefly toward the end of this volume.
Am not sure if I missed any other real or literary characters.
Overall, a good story (tho there are a few issues. One of the bad guys is referred to as "Mr. Average", but is never identified as to who he is. He disappears, never to return in the second part).
I am unclear why the use of the PD pulp heroes wasn't played up more.
